At "What's in a Doctor's Bag?", we use dynamic and entertaining presentations to teach children what happens at a doctor's check-up. By learning about very basic medical concepts and instruments, kids will be more comfortable when the time comes to visit their doctors. Medicine can often be scary, but we take away the mystery and make it fun!

Why should our organization interest YOU?
-
Our ideas and teachings are based on the childrens' book "What's in a Doctor's Bag?" by Neil Shulman. The story tells of a young boy who is afraid of his doctor. However, with the help of "Dr. Neil the Banana Peel" and some of his friendly instruments one visit, he learns that the doctor is nothing to be scared of. Dr. Neil and his gang teach the boy all about how they work to keep him healthy. Afterwards, the boy realizes that check-ups don't have to be scary, they can be fun!
-
Our presentations can be hosted by elementary schools or libraries and are primarily for children ages 4-10.
-
Our presentations are flexible and can be changed to fit any time frame, with activities lasting anywhere from 30-60 minutes.
-
We are composed of college and high school students, so kids will be exposed to students continuing their education at the next level.
-
The kids learn how to take their health into their own hands. Instead of feeling completely reliable on other people, they learn at a young age that they can monitor their own body.
- It's a FREE presentation for any location
Choose from a variety of actitivites to personalize your presentation:
- We take turns reading from Dr. Shulman's book while periodically stopping to discuss each medical instrument. Toy versions of each character are used to demonstrate their function. (Blood pressure cuff, Stethoscope, Knee knocker, etc.)
- We can perform a skit adapted from the book, using our costumes and also faculty volunteers.
- We hold brief "Question and Answer" sessions about what the students learned.
- The kids can be divided into groups that travel to different stations. Each station shows how to use a different doctor's instrument.
- Activity sheets and stickers can be provided for smaller group presentations.
- A showing of the "What's in a Doctor's Bag?" DVD which ends with a quick and easy pop quiz
